The park was created in 1971and covers about 887km primarily established for its aquatic bird life, particularly those that feed and breed on lakes Abijatta and Shalla in Large numbers. The park also contains two extreme lakes Abiyata shallow and the water is used for drink and bathing but Shalla is the deepest rift valley lakes.

There are more than 403 bird species of which 6 are endemic such as Wattle ibis, Thicked billed raven, Black –winged love bird ,Banded barbet= Flamingo, Cormorant & Pelican are common as well as 76 Species of which 6 are endemic such as Mahomet’s mouse ,White –footed rat, Harrington’s and others .
